Complete Classification of Glass Edging Machines
Primary Classification by Number of Edges Processed
Single-Sided (Straight Line) Edgers
The most common type. The glass passes through a single row of spindles that work on one edge. Subtypes include horizontal straight line (for flat edges), vertical straight line (for heavy or oversized glass), and portable edgers for on-site work. Used by small fabricators and for custom shapes.
Double-Sided Edgers
Two parallel spindles process opposite edges in one pass. Further divided into:
Fixed double edger: Distance between spindles is manually adjusted.
Automatic double edger: CNC-controlled adjustment with memory for different sizes.
Ideal for shower doors, table tops, and architectural glazing where parallel edges are required.

Straight Line Edging Machines for Flat Edges (Arris)
These machines simply grind the sharp corners of the glass flat, leaving a matte or polished surface. They are the simplest and cheapest, used for basic window glass and mirrors.
Beveling Machines
A specialized straight line machine where the grinding wheels are angled (typically 15° to 45°) to create a sloping edge. Beveling requires extra wheel stations and precise angle control. Used for high-end furniture, display cases, and decorative mirrors.
Pencil Edge / Round Edge Machines
Wheels are profiled to produce a convex, semicircular edge. This is the most common polished edge for tabletops and shelves. Machines can be straight line or double edger.
Miter and Chamfer Edgers
These produce a 45° angle across the entire edge thickness, often for corner joints in glass furniture or showcase assembly. Miter edgers require heavy-duty spindles and precise positioning.
Classification by Level of Automation and CNC Integration
Manual Feed Edgers
The operator pushes the glass manually against the wheels. Low cost but low consistency. Only for small shops and occasional use.
Semi-Automatic (Conveyor-Fed) Edgers
The glass is placed on a conveyor that moves it through the wheel stations. Operator only loads and unloads. This covers 80% of the market for straight line and double edgers.
Fully CNC Glass Edging Centers
These 5-axis or 6-axis machines can edge any shape – circles, ovals, complex curves – without changing tooling manually. The glass is fixed on a vacuum table, and the spindle moves around it. Extremely expensive but necessary for automotive, aerospace, and specialty architectural glass.
Other Specialized Types
Arc edging machine: For curved glass edges, often used in shower enclosures and curved display cases.
Drill and edge combination machine: Integrates hole drilling with edge grinding for one-step processing.
Oscillating edger: The wheels oscillate laterally to reduce wheel wear and improve finish on hard glass.
