Critical Technical Specifications You Cannot Ignore
When selecting a glass edge grinding and polishing machine, small oversights lead to poor edge quality or frequent breakdowns. Focus on these core parameters.
Spindle Runout and Bearing Quality
The spindle holds the grinding wheels. Any runout above 0.02 mm will cause chipping and wavy edges. Ask for the manufacturer’s runout certificate. High-end machines use precision angular contact bearings (P4 or higher) and dynamic balancing. Avoid machines that use ordinary deep-groove bearings.
Conveyor Belt Material and Speed Control
Rubber conveyor belts with polyurethane coating provide better grip on wet glass. The speed should be infinitely adjustable via a variable-frequency drive (VFD). Fixed-speed machines cannot adapt to different glass thicknesses or wheel grits. Test the speed range: 1–6 m/min is typical for straight line machines; double edgers should reach 8–12 m/min.
Cooling System Design
Inadequate cooling causes wheel glazing and thermal stress cracks. Check the number, position, and flow rate of coolant nozzles. Each grinding and polishing wheel should have its own adjustable nozzle. A 200–300 liter per minute pump with filtration is mandatory. Also verify the water tank has two chambers: one for settling glass particles and a clean water return.
Wheel and Abrasive Considerations During Purchase
Diamond and Resin Wheel Compatibility
The machine must accept standard wheel diameters (150 mm or 200 mm) and bore sizes (50 mm, 70 mm). Non-standard sizes lock you into a single supplier. Also confirm that the machine can hold both metal-bond diamond wheels for rough grinding and resin-bond polishing wheels for final gloss.
Quick-Change Mechanism
Look for a spindle with a hydraulic or threaded quick-release nut. Changing a full set of wheels should take less than 20 minutes. Machines that require special tools or disassembly of guards will cost you hours of downtime weekly.
After-Sales Service and Hidden Costs
Availability of Spare Parts
Ask for a list of wear parts: belts, bearings, seals, and control boards. The supplier should guarantee at least five years of parts availability. Check online forums for complaints about parts delays.
Installation and Training
Does the price include commissioning and on-site operator training? Without proper training, even the best machine will produce defects. Request a detailed training checklist: wheel dressing, speed adjustment, and daily maintenance procedures.
